Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Will the Mt. Carmel Highway be completely closed to RVs?
It depends on the size and weight of the RV. RVs and large vehicles that meet the size and weight restrictions can still use Mt. Carmel Highway. Only vehicles exceeding the limits (over 11’4″ tall, 7’10” wide, 50′ long, or 50,000 lbs) are restricted.
Can I Drive My RV Into Zion Canyon?
Short answer: Not recommended for large RVs.
Zion Mt. Carmel Highway (SR-9): New restrictions effective June 7, 2026, limit vehicles over 11’4″ tall, 7’10” wide, 50′ long, or 50,000 lbs. Vehicles exceeding these limits will not be able to drive along Zion Mt. Carmel Highway from Canyon Junction to the East Entrance. See NPS website for more details.
Zion Canyon Road: Private vehicles are prohibited March-November. You must use the free park shuttle from the Visitor Center. Winter allows private vehicles, but the road has tight turns that may be a challenge for large RVs.
Bottom line: Only drive your RV into the park if you have campground reservations and you are entering the South Entrance. If you are entering the East Entrance, be sure your vehicle meets the new vehicle restrictions. No campground reservation? No problem, park at Zionโs oversize vehicle parking inside the South Entrance, OR along Springdaleโs Lion Blvd, the Zion Corridor Park & Ride in Virgin.
How many spots are at the park and ride?
The Park & Ride will offer 32 total parking spaces, including 8 designated oversized spaces for RVs, trailers, and large vehicles. Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
How long does it take to get from Virgin to Zion’s South Entrance?
By car: Approximately 20-25 minutes via SR-9 East through Rockville and Springdale. By SunTran bus or ZWB Shuttle: Approximately 30 minutes with stops.
How often does the SunTran shuttle run from Virgin?
Monday through Saturday, you should expect a bus approximately every hour. Check current schedules at SunTran.com or Download Bus Route and Schedule. On Sundays, the ZWB Shuttle runs only a couple of times in the a.m. and p.m., so itโs important to plan ahead. Be sure to get to the stop early and plan some buffer time to make sure you can get back to Lion Boulevard on time.ย
Pro tip: Walking to and from Lion Boulevard to the South Entrance / Zion Canyon Village is short and easy. Donโt waste time trying to get on the Springdale shuttle to get to Lion Boulevard when you can walk that 0.3 miles in about 10 minutes.
Do I need to reserve shuttle seats in advance?
No reservations are needed for the SunTran bus or ZWB shuttle, but these operate on a first-come, first-served basis and are $5 per ride.
