SR-9 Safety Improvements

Project Overview

Workers will provide safety improvements in Springdale and Rockville (MP 26-32) with crosswalks, pushbutton crosswalk signs, and asphalt installation. Workers will also replace signs and road messaging.

Crews will begin paving June 29 with estimated completion August 28. Work will take place Sunday through Saturday, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. There will be one lane of unrestricted traffic in each direction where there are four lanes, and alternating lanes of travel where there are fewer than four lanes.

SR-9 Paving

Project Overview

Workers will install improved pedestrian access ramps, repave and restripe the roadway, and replace damaged or aged signs from Hurricane to La Verkin (MP 9-12).

Crews will begin paving June 29 with estimated completion August 28. Work hours are 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday work can be done night or day. There will be one lane of unrestricted traffic in each direction where there are four lanes, and alternating lanes of travel where there are fewer than four lanes.

Zion Canyon Technology

Project Overview

UDOT, in partnership with Zion Canyon and the National Park Service, is undertaking a significant project to install middle-mile fiber optics to support last-mile connectivity to communities along SR-9. This initiative is part of UDOT’s broader effort to expand and modernize the state’s fiber optic infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and supporting Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) throughout Utah. The project focuses on improving communication capabilities, safety, and overall visitor experience in Zion National Park.

EAST ZION IMPROVED

East Zion Improved project logo
Project Overview

To accommodate future growth and development in the area east of Zion National Park, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has completed the East Zion Roundabout and Improvement Project, that included:

  • Installed a new roundabout at the intersection of North Fork Road (MP 46.5) and State Route 9
  • Added intersection improvements at MP 45.2 that include an at-grade pedestrian crossing, widening SR-9 to accommodate turn lanes, widened areas for a future shuttle, and striping and signing improvements
  • Reduced speed from 55 mph to 35 mph from the east entrance of Zion National Park (MP 44.8) to MP 45.5. Speed reduction from 55 mph to 45 mph from MP 45.5 to MP 46.75
  • Installed a new pedestrian underpass at the intersection of North Fork Road (MP 46.5) and SR-9
    Installed a 14-foot wide multi-use path on the south side of SR-9 between MP 45.2 and MP 46.5
  • Installed wildlife crossing conflict mitigation measures along SR-9 including speed reduction, static signage, and variable message signs

As much as possible, improvements were designed to harmonize with the surrounding environment.
